The pilot of the 1957 De Havilland DHC-3T plane, which crashed in the south west of Alaska, stated that there had been an occurrence of turbulence over the Lake Nerka, but the investigators stated that they did not find any distress signal made by the plane. Along with Ted Stevens, four other people died in the accident.

The experts say that the plane took off between 2:00 or 3:00 pm and crashed after 15 minutes of flight. It is said the pilot did not submit a flight plan with the Federal Aviation Administration, but he was not required to do so.
